I’m heading to NYC for the Christmas holiday, and I know there’s no snow in the forecast, just wondering if there’s still snow on the ground when I get there on Christmas Eve.

If you’re looking for New York City shopping deals, head on over to Downtown first of all. Along the Lower Manhattan and the Financial District you will find familiar drool-worthy stores that boast the finest clothing around. Think Abercrombie and Fitch, the Sunglass Hut line on Fulton Street, Ann Taylor and the main cobbled drag on Seaport where you can find lots of great deals. Think Abercrombie and Fitch, the Sunglass Hut line on Fulton Street, Ann Taylor and the main cobbled drag on Seaport as the place to find lots of great deals.
There are also several tiers of generally nondescript shops in this area, as well as a big food course where you can eat while you rest from shopping. This place is actually a landmark in shopping New York style because it used to be a waterfront barge which was not converted into a shopping mall.
Also, brace yourself for some really exciting quality browsing in Chinatown: Head here to score some New York City shopping deals with an Asian twist. There are great fish and herbal markets that littler the Mott and Mulberry streets, which are famous for their hustle bustle and exotic goodies. Shopping in New York would not be complete without these amazing little trinkets. Of course, if you want the replicas and knockoffs of your designer duds, you can always find them dispersed around the area. Sunglasses, watches, leather bags and so much more can be found on Canal Street where the prices are less than a fourth of the real McCoy.
The Lower East Side is the artist’s heaven when it comes to New York City shopping deals. Most trendsetter and style-starters can be found littering the streets of this area as it has become a hip hub of all things fashionable—and remains affordable too. There is a growing crop of alternative shops to be found down on the south side of Houston and the north side of Grand Street (right between the streets of Allen and Clinton), which specializes in the latest and greatest of fashion trends. Indeed, shopping New York City style will never be complete without a quick (or long and lingering) side trip to the Lower East Side.
And for the super fashionable set, there is always your standard SoHo. It is New York City shopping deal at its hyper trendy finest. The big names around this block include J.Crew, which have conducted a big takeover of the lofts in these areas. Most native New Yorkers complain that SoHo has become quite outdated, much like the Mall of America, but a lot of tourists still love a quick visit. Shopping New York city style must also include the fashionable and historic SoHo as the artistry vibe and trendy flair of ages past will surely be memorable for anyone.
And of course, who could ever forget to add the whimsical and charming East Village? New York City shopping deals abound in such a place where bohemian rules (and the stiff upper lip will see nothing but a raised eyebrow). This hip and trendy place has the warm vibe that will make shopping in New York City a happy event. Get eye-popping Indian silks in unbeatable prices and trendy trinkets that rival that of art pieces in MoMA.

I’m planning on visiting a few people this holiday season and I don’t have a car to drive on my own. I really don’t know the best way to go to Union city from Astoria, NY. Should I just pay for a cab or are there cheaper public transports available? Thanks!

New York City, other than being the city that never sleeps is also an excellent vacation destination. If you’re considering a New York Vacation but worried about the selection or availability of great family activities in which to participate, let me put your mind to rest. There are many family activities in New York City that will appeal to all ages from toddlers to teens. Some of these great activities are surprisingly easy on the pocketbook despite New York City’s reputation for being an expensive place to live and/or visit.
There are many ways the careful planner can enjoy many of this great cities attractions for little or no cost. Most museums offer free admission one night or day each week. Check around and plan your trip to that particular museum on the free days and evenings. Additionally, several of the museums offer a ‘pay what you wish’ policy, which allows you to offer a donation for entrance rather than having a set price that would exclude many from visiting. Visiting museums are a great way for everyone in your family to gain some cultural insight from their New York City visit while the free nights make this experience rather easy on the pocketbook.
In addition to these museums you can also experience the technology of tomorrow at the Sony Wonder Technology Lab at no cost or take a stroll down the boardwalk of Coney Island. In the winter, try ice-skating in Rockefeller Center. If you have the time and inclination Queens County Farm Museum offers free admission (with the exception of special events so be sure to check) and provides the family with a step back in time.
To really take a bite out of the Big Apple try the market at Union Square Green Market. In addition to fresh fruits and vegetables you will find all kinds of yummy goodies to eat and drink. There are also many walking tours some guided (these tend to cost money) and many self guided tours you can take through the neighborhoods of New York as well as some historic walking tours.
For a truly historical experience visit Federal Hall National Memorial. Admission is free and you will be able to view American History at its core. This is the place where George Washington took the oath of office and our form of democracy was born. For any American history buff or school aged child this is one of the must see freebies available in New York City. Other national parks in New York City that are of interest historically include Ellis Isle, the Statue of Liberty, Grant’s Tomb, and Fort Wadsworth. Each of these parks offer free admission to the general public and make a great place for the entire family to not only visit and enjoy but also to learn about our history.
Wave Hill is another great place to visit. This tour is free during the week otherwise is it $4 for adults and $2 for children. Regardless of whether you go during the week or on the weekend it is still an excellent value for the price of your visit.
Of course this is only a small sample of the many free and low priced things to do in this great city. You will definitely want to wear comfortable walking shoes for the many miles your feet will take you in this fascinating city. In addition to the many family activities mentioned above, New York City is home to some of the world’s finest parks, which also offer free recreational and cultural experiences to their visitors.
I highly recommend that you pay careful attention to try and plan activities that are free and activities that cost little money with those other can’t miss activities in similar areas. This will save time (a very big commodity when traveling around New York City) and the money you would pay in transportation fees. Planning your trip ahead of time is one of the most economical decisions you can make. This doesn’t mean that you can’t be flexible if you see something when you get there, just that you have a pretty good idea of the things you really want to do balanced with the reality of the budget with which you have to do them all. The most important thing to do is have fun!

If you are planning a trip to New York city and you are heavily limited on your budget, rest assured that you can still have a meaningful trip. The only thing is you will need to sacrifice on some of the luxuries and save on other expenses such as food and souvenirs. One thing you can do to minimize expenses is to stay in a cheap New York hotel.
Cheap does not necessarily mean a bad thing especially when we are talking about a New York hotel. You will just have to be extra careful because some establishments abuse the word cheap and they would offer horrendous services. A stay in a New York hotel need not be expensive and while you may want to spend a little on it, you can still get at least the basic accommodations and necessities anybody would expect.
Here are a few things that you should expect should you decide to stay in a cheap New York hotel room.
1. No Internet access.
This may not be very important especially if you are not on a business trip. After all, you are there to see the city and not to surf the Internet in your New York hotel room. And if there is no Internet connection, you may also not expect a computer. You can just bring your laptop with you and surf the net in a coffee shop. There are plenty of coffee shops and other establishments that offer free Internet connection.
2. No cable TV.
You have plenty of time to watch your favorite shows on cable television back at home. This is also a good thing because there will be less distractions and your attention will be focused more on planning your itinerary for the rest of your stay.
3. There is only one complimentary meal.
An inexpensive New York hotel will offer just one complimentary meal or none at all and it is usually breakfast. Go try it during your first day at the hotel but if you find that the food is of such low quality, then you can just go out and eat. New York City has so many restaurants and offer the best in every form of dining.
4. No telephone
Although this may come as a standard equipment in a hotel room, some hotels will not include a phone to help cut off the expenses. No worries there. You can just bring your cellphone with you or you can always call at the reception.
5. Size does matter
If you are paying less, then you should not expect to get a suite. A standard room may just be the right size for two people or even just one. Don’t expect to find a king size bed, a walk in closet or even a full size bath tub.
These are just some of the things that you should be aware of if you are staying in a cheap New York hotel. Another thing worth mentioning is that the farther away from the center of the city the hotel is, the cheaper the price of the room goes down. Keep these things in mind and may you have a pleasant trip.
