I am traveling from Boston to Washington DC and wanted to stop by New York city for the day. I heard that there are numerous fees to get on and off the island. My questions is, what is the best and least expensive way I can do this? Should I just suck it up and deal with it, or park off the island and bus/cab it? Thanks in advance…

My advice is drive to either Jersey City or Hoboken, NJ, via Westchester County (I-287), and park you car at one of the parking garages there. Then take the PATH train into and out of New York City. I’ve included a links to several garages near the PATH train station in both cities here:

    Grove Street Station

    Exchange Place Station

    Pavonia/Newport Station

    Hoboken Station

Now, the PATH is a rapid transit rail system that travels between New York City and New Jersey, serving Hoboken, Jersey City, Harrison and Newark. The fare is $1.50 each way ($1.75 after March 2), which is completely cheaper than taking the car into New York City and having to pay to those extremely high tolls.

Once in Manhattan, you can buy a 1-day Fun Pass for $7 ($7.50 after March 2) from any subway station vending machine and use it to ride the subway and bus system in New York City for the either day.

I hope this information is very helpful. If you have any questions or need travel directions while in town, just drop me a line by clicking the avatar and e-mail icon in the profile.

    Good luck and happy travels.

If I was travelling from Boston to Washington with a stop over in NYC, I would honestly take AMTRAK. It’s not cheap, no, but it’s really easy! And you will get right into midtown Manhattan, and then right into central D.C. and you won’t have to worry about what to do with the car (which you won’t use in NYC, and possibly not need in D.C. either - there’s a pretty good subway there, too!)

Leave the car at home. Save the earth a little polution, get a good nap, or a good read, and join the rest of your fellow travellers on the train! It’s fun, it’s really easy to use, and it’s just better!
