Trip to New York?

My mom and I are planning a trip to New York for the Thansgiving Holiday. Any suggestions for hotels and restaurants? Whats the difference between midtown and downtown? Sights to see? Subway, bus, cab, walk - best transportation?

I went to New York last year and I stayed at the Belvedere Hotel, which is close to Times Square.

Tavern on the Green is a nice, fancy restaurant by Central Park. There are also a whole whack of restaurants all over the city.

Manhattan is divided into Downtown, Midtown, and Uptown. Downtown is naturally lower Manhattan (Wall Street, business section), Midtown is the middle section (where Times Square is), and Uptown is the upper section, where Harlem and other places are.

There are a million things you could see there. You probably wouldn’t be able to see everything in a week or less. You’d need to go for way longer than that to be able to see everything. But some of the more famous things to see are: Empire State Building (86th floor), Statue of Liberty/Ellis Island, Times Square, Rockefeller Center, and many others.

I’d say taking the subway is your best mode of transportation. I never took the bus in Manhattan, so I’m not exactly sure about that. You could take the cab if you’d like, but there could be loads of traffic, as there usually is. Don’t walk everywhere because it could take too long (like walking from Downtown all the way to Midtown). You could always walk after you get off the subway though, but don’t kill yourself by walking everywhere you go.

Have fun in New York. It’s a great place.

broadway play, central park, empire state building, chinatown, little italy, times square, rockefellar plaza, NBC, radio city christmas show, etc. maybe try getting on the today show one morning!!! :] its really crowded around that time of year but its always sooo much fun!!! and to top off your new york experience, take the subway (definitely. it saves your feet) and try a slice of Brooklyn style pizza ;]

Don’t forget the thanksgiving day parade. They blow up all the floats the night before around 1am and it can be alot of fun. Don’t be scared away from some of the top NYC restaurants. Some of them offer amazing Prix fixe lunch menus. Although it is still pricey, you can sample some of the worlds greatest cuisines. Look up the restaurant ratings at Zagats.com. As far as transportation, cabs are best after 8pm as the traffic will be awful. Walking and subways are the fastest and cheapest.
